Eastern Coyote Pups drinking milk from mom

Eastern coyote pups, born in the quiet seclusion of spring dens, begin their lives completely dependent on their mother’s care. During the first few weeks after birth, their mother’s milk is their only source of nourishment. The pups, usually numbering between four and seven, are born blind and helpless, covered in soft grayish-brown fur. They huddle close to their mother for warmth and instinctively nuzzle against her belly to find her nipples. Nursing not only provides the rich, fatty milk they need to grow but also strengthens the bond between mother and offspring.

The mother coyote is exceptionally attentive during this time. She rarely leaves the den, relying on her mate to bring back food. Her milk is full of essential nutrients that help the pups develop strong bones, muscles, and immune systems. As the weeks go by, the pups’ eyes open, their hearing sharpens, and they begin to explore the den. Still, they return frequently to nurse, their small tails wagging as they drink eagerly.

By the time the pups are three to four weeks old, the mother starts weaning them gradually. She will regurgitate partially digested food, teaching them to eat solid meals while still allowing occasional nursing for comfort. This transition marks an important developmental stage, preparing the pups for life outside the den.

Watching Eastern coyote pups nurse is a glimpse into the tender, family-oriented side of a species often misunderstood as solitary or aggressive. It highlights the strong maternal instincts that drive the survival of these adaptable animals. The early days of nursing form the foundation of strength, coordination, and social bonds that will sustain the pups as they grow into skilled hunters and resilient members of the Eastern coyote family.
